CW4 Arthur Wesley (Art) Middleton, US ARMY RET, passed away peacefully May 29th, 2023 at Riverview Hospital surrounded by his family.
Art was born March 20th, 1936 at Holy Name of Jesus Hospital to Juanita Kathleen and Joseph Lamar Middleton. He resided in Attalla, AL until graduating from Etowah High School and enlisted in the US Army in July of 1954. Serving 22 years active duty, being stationed across the country from Hawaii to Alaska as well as overseas in France, Korea and Vietnam. While in Duc Pho and Chu Lai, Vietnam he was involved in 5 combat campaigns. Art was then assigned to the Office of the Secretary of Defense, The Pentagon as a Control Analyst and Top Secret Control Officer where he was in charge of the team that confiscated the Pentagon Papers from the Rand Corporation.
Art was awarded multiple medals and decorations while in the military including The Bronze Star and Overseas Service Medal. Post retirement Art embarked on a second career in Personnel Management as the Vice President, Support Services at Baptist Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Several Community Associations during this time.
Art found great joy in his calling teaching the LIFE Sunday School class at White Springs Baptist Church of which he was a long standing member and Deacon Emeritus.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Lamar and Juanita Kathleen Middleton and his brother Joseph Henry (Buddy) Middleton. He is survived by his wife Janice Lee Gray Middleton, daughters Renee (Earl Schoenborn) Middleton, Debra (Steven) Hanks, grandchildren Helen McKeon, Taylor Hanks, Emily Schoenborn and Jackson ic Hanks. Sisters Joann Mitchell and Martha (Marty) Middleton and multiple nephews and nieces.
Services and visitation will be held on Saturday June 3rd at White Springs Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 am service immediately after. Interment will be at Lee Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews Michael and Wesley Mitchell, Jim and Tim Copeland, Ward L. Bailey and Liam Scully. Honorary Pallbearers will be the LIFE Sunday School class.
