TUSCUMBIA-You are invited to meet Herb Rieth at the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art  located at 511 N. Water Street, Tuscumbia, AL from 1-3 p.m., January 22, 2017 at the opening of a solo exhibition of his work, Whole Cloth: A Mid-Career Retrospective of Contemporary Fabric Artist Herb Rieth.

Nocturn, 62 x 36 in.

Rieth combines materials from safety pins and spikes to camouflage and paint.

“With quilts you have different patterns and you plan it out, whereas with my stuff, I build them and they kind of happen as I go along,” he said. “They’re very much like paintings in that way.”

County Fair, 52 x 38 in.

“The mixed media materials that I work with have a strong significance for me and enter at various times into my history,” he said. “… Though the signifiers are drawn from my past, there are aspects that are available to everyone, including humor. Laughter is a very good response to parts of many of the works.”

His work has been shown at Cincinnati’s Contemporary Art Center’s UnMuseum, the Mississippi Museum of Art and solo and group shows in 23 states.

Reith earned his B.A. degree from Indiana University and M.F.A. from the University of Cincinnati.
