Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at Benefield Funeral Home, 85499 AL-9, Ashland, AL, with visitation from 5:30 to 8:00 pm on the prior Monday evening.

Annie Mitchell Latham passed away on Friday, August 4, 2023, at the age of 84, after a valiant battle with a cancerous brain tumor. She was born on June 16, 1939, to Bing and Willie Bell Mitchell in Lineville, Alabama, where she continued a life of loving and sharing.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Edward Latham of Lineville; one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Michelle Latham of Montgomery, AL; two granddaughters and one grandson-in-law, Abby and Burton Walker of Madison, AL, and Caroline Latham of Nashville, TN; two sisters, Reba Horn of Lineville and Dot Carmack of Talladega, AL; and many wonderful nieces, nephews and their families along with a community of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and ten siblings, including Arthur Mitchell, Lewis Mitchell, William B. Mitchell, Eunice Adamson, James Mitchell, Velma Mitchell, Lois Adams, Ozeal Smith, Hugh Mitchell, and Margaret Turner. The youngest of all her siblings, she enjoyed being the baby of the family and loved her family without measure.

She was a member of the Campbell Springs Church of Christ, having become a Christian early on. She and Edward are graduates of the class of 1957 of Lineville High School. In addition to her own family, she loved her church family, her friends, and all of Clay County.

She retired in the spring of 2016 following a lengthy career with the State of Alabama Administrative Office of Courts, serving as a Judicial Assistant in both the District and Circuit courts in Clay County. In her earliest years, her first part-time and full-time jobs were with the former McCrary’s Department Store and the former Farmers & Merchants Bank in Lineville, where she made many lifelong friends.

She enjoyed shopping, table-scaping, entertaining, tea parties, and decorating for each season and holiday, especially Christmas. She enjoyed dressing up in a style all her own. She was a very giving person who enjoyed sharing with others. Most every year, she would later come across a gift or two she had purchased and forgotten to wrap, adding to her enjoyment of giving. Surprising her, on the other hand, was challenging to do, despite many attempts through the years. Among her most memorable times were enjoying coffee with Edward in the breakfast room, time in the pergola he built for her in retirement, and time with her granddaughters.

The family expresses its most profound appreciation to her caregiver and special friend, Elizabeth Smith; to Dr. Buddy Smith, Amanda Grant, and the staff of Lineville Clinic; to Dr. Mina Lobbous and the physicians and staff of UAB Department of Neurooncology and the UAB Russell Medical Cancer Center for their excellent care; to Diane Giddens, Deanna Cotney, David Holcombe, Blake Hudson, Donna Medforth, Martha Patterson, Amelia Watts and the entire team of Hospice of Clay County; and to her special niece, Becky Horn, who in addition to her sisters Dot and Reba, provided continual loving support throughout her illness. Our appreciation is also expressed to Amelia Simmons for her special help in her final hours.

While our days will see one less beautiful smile in her absence, we will forever hold that smile in our hearts.

Flowers will be accepted, however the family prefers memorial contributions in her honor be made to Freed Hardeman University, Annie M. Latham Memorial Scholarship Fund, 158 E. Main St., Henderson, TN 38340.
