Anne LaVerne Sharpe Moorhead
LaVerne Sharpe Moorhead, 98, of Huntsville, Alabama suffered a stroke at her home on Christmas Eve and passed away at Huntsville Hospital on December 26, 2013.
She was born November 22, 1915 in Orangeburg, SC. She had two brothers, both deceased, Raymond, who lived in England and Bernard who was killed during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.
LaVerne graduated from Limestone College in Gaffney, SC with a Bachelors Degree in Art in 1938. She was the Limestone College May Queen of 1938. After graduation she married James Moorhead on January 29, 1939. During World War II both Jim and LaVerne worked at the Naval Mine Depot in Williamsburg, VA.
Laverne and Jim lived in South Carolina, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida until their retirement to Huntsville to be near their two sons who are now both retired aerospace engineers.
LaVerne, a widow since 1994, enjoyed a variety of handcrafts and canning pickles and figs for her family. She was known for her macaroni and cheese which her husband lovingly called “Cheese Pie.”
LaVerne was always involved in music, and served as choir director in several Baptist churches, played the organ and piano, and taught piano.
A member of University Baptist Church since 1990, she served as class pianist and taught adult Sunday school classes. She was an active member of Live Wire and Jubilee Singers.
She is survived by two sons; James Moorhead and his wife Sherry, John Moorhead and his wife Carolyn; five grandchildren; Katherine Moorhead Childers and her husband Jake, Jonathan Moorhead and his wife Sharon, John Bjorklund and his wife Chrissy, Kelly Murray and her husband Ryan, and Justin Moorhead.: Eight great-grandchildren: Joshua Childers, Jacob Childers, Joseph Childers , Nahum Moorhead, Isaac Moorhead, Jesse Moorhead, Jonas Moorhead, and Miriam Moorhead.
Arrangements are being handled by Spry Funeral Home of Huntsville. Visitation will be held at University Baptist Church on Sunday, December 29 at 2:00 pm followed at 3:00 pm with the funeral service. Interment will follow at Huntsville Memory Gardens in Huntsville.
