Anna Sue Goggins McVay, 84, won the victory of her faith after two years of failing health at NMMC Hospice Unit on Tuesday, December 7, 2018. She was one of 5 children born to Herman Goggins and Susie Smith Goggins of the Palmetto Community of Lee County on May 31, 1934. She grew up there and graduated from Verona High School where she was valedictorian of her class and a star basketball player. She married Bobby McVay on Dec. 22, 1951. They made their home in the Pontocola Community for many years. A member of Palmetto Baptist Church, she worked many years at H.I.S. Pants Factory in Verona and spent her last 10 years working at the Operations Center of Bancorp South, before retiring. Her past times included working in the yard, sewing and opening her home to the community for a home cooked meal. She was known for her culinary abilities especially her fried chicken. Her family and their many friends regularly enjoyed many meals at the Mcvay household. In their retirement years, she and Bobby enjoyed spending time together riding the Natchez Trace relishing God’s creation and eating lunch at whatever town they ended up in that day.
A service celebrating her life will be held at 2 PM Today (Sat. 12/8/18) at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. Mark Cayson officiating assisted by Bro. Robert Armstrong. Private burial will follow in the Goggin family plot at Palmetto Cemetery. Visitation will be from Noon-service time today at Holland-Tupelo Chapel, which is honored to be serving their friends.
Survivors include her children: Pam McVay Kelly (Tommy) of Houston, Ken McVay (Octavia) of Pontocola and Gary McVay (Debbie) of Nettleton. Her grandchildren: Barry Kelly (Christi), Bethany Kelly (Scott Free), Berea Adams (Dusty), Beka Ward, (Chase), Tom Kelly (Emily), Leeanna Walker (Corey), Kendra Johns (Jake), Ben McVay (Glenda), Chandler McVay, Clay Coggin (Ashley), Michael McVay (Candice) and Anna Lisa McVay. 35 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild and their extended families, her sister, Callie Ruth Carter(Thomas) of Pontocola. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bobby, her daughter, Linda McVay Mink and three brothers, Otis, Farrell and Marlin.
Pallbearers will be Sammie Wood, Howard Rutledge, Jon McFarling, Robert Allen Godfrey, Jake Johns, Clay Coggin, Jeff Scott, Curtis Hinton, Ronnie Hester, Ben McVay and Kenneth Cummings.
