Ann Given Hopper, 90, of Huntsville, died Tuesday, November 21, 2023. She was a descendant of early Madison County Settlers and the daughter of the late Charles G. Given and Nona McMullen Given.
She was reared in Gurley, Alabama, where she attended elementary school. Her secondary education was completed in the Huntsville public schools. She was a graduating member of the Huntsville High School class of 1950, at the age of 16.
Ann earned a B.A. degree from Huntingdon College, Montgomery, Alabama, and an M.A. degree from the University of Alabama, Birmingham. She began employment with the state of Alabama in Huntsville as a social worker and subsequently an educator for a combined total of 34 years of service upon retirement in 1992 from the Huntsville City Schools. She was a lifelong member of the Gurley United Methodist Church.
Survivors are sons, Charles Ewing Hopper, Jr. (Stephanie) and Edward Given Hopper; daughters, Nona Dana Hopper and Carole Hopper Fandre (Andrew); grandchildren, Justin Hale Campbell, Danielle Ann Fandre Davis (Austin), and Donovan Charles Fandre. Other survivors are several cousins, nieces, and nephews; and one great-niece, Cynthia Smith Wilkerson (John).
In addition to her parents, Ann was predeceased by her sister, Marjorie Given Phelan, nephew, Roger E. Phelan, Jr., niece, Elaine Phelan Smith, and her former husband, Charles E. Hopper, Sr.
Interment will be held Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. in the McMullen-Given plot at the Gurley Cemetery, Cemetery Road, with the Reverend Al Geise officiating.
The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff of Home Instead, the nurses and staff with Hospice Family Care, and especially, her long-term caregiver, Tania Sherwood, for her years of loving care and companionship.
