Ann Carol Dicus Kennamer (66) of Scottsboro, Alabama passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at the Highlands Medical Center. Ann was born in Craig, Colorado on June 4, 1955, to George Houston Dicus of Scottsboro and his wife, Mary Nell Chiles Dicus of Albertville.
The family moved home to Northeast Alabama when she started the first grade at Caldwell School and she spent the remainder of her life giving back to her community.
A 1973 graduate of Scottsboro High School she earned a degree in education from Jacksonville State University and later attended the University of Alabama for graduate school. On graduation she taught school in Scottsboro for several years before going into business at the Scottsboro Ladies and Children’s Shoppe, on the Square. She later acquired the Payne’s Drug Store fountain operation and saved that local landmark from closing. She went back into education working as the Executor Director of the Impact Learning Center in Scottsboro for many years. After retiring from the center she “got bored” and spent her last years working with the Project Search Program in Marshall County helping train handicapped and disabled children for the work force.
Ann never met a stranger and those who knew her will miss her determination, her drive, her laughter and her devotion to her family and friends. They might also miss her cooking, — Ann was a great cook.
A devoted mother, Ann was exceptionally proud of her daughters, Georgia and Molly, and her foster son, Billy. Her devotion to her children was surpassed only by her love of her grandchildren, Zanna, George, and Jocelyn, all of whom made her exceptionally happy.
Ann was involved in may activities and organizations during her lifetime. She was a member of the Scottsboro Women’s League and an active member of Scottsboro’s First United Methodist Church where she served on the Church Council, as a Trustee, and as an MYF counselor. She was also a longtime Board Member of the Church’s Daycare. She was a Rotarian, serving as President of the Scottsboro Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
She is survived by her husband, Stephen Kennamer, her daughters, Georgia Boles and Molly Kennamer, grandchildren, Zanna, George and Jocelyn Boles, her brother James H. Dicus, her two “almost sisters”, Martha Campbell Pullen and Mary Campbell Nixon, her foster son, Bill Messer, her mother in law, Joyce Money Kennamer and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George H. Dicus and Mary Nell Dicus, her step-mother Elizabeth Holder Dicus and her father in law, A.J. Kennamer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Scottsboro Public Library, the Impact Learning Center or The ARC of Jackson County.
A graveside service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday September 26, 2021. Interment will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
