Angela Hulsey

Citizens often react to stories of crime with hope for justice.  Since becoming an Assistant District Attorney in 2003, Angela Hulsey has been a direct advocate for achieving it. It’s a role she’s prepared for since telling her dad at the age of fourteen that she wanted to be a lawyer, and many have benefited from her decision.  With Bryce Graham retiring, she now seeks to further protect the residents of Colbert County by becoming the county’s next District Attorney.  With over 10,000 felony investigations, 2,600 felony prosecutions, and more than 50 felony jury trials on her resume,  she is now well prepared to seek that office.

Angela attended the University of North Alabama and graduated with a double major in Political Science and English.  She earned her law degree from Mississippi College School of Law, where she took pre-trial practice and trial advocacy classes.  After studying for many hours on her own, she passed the bar exam on her first attempt in February, 2002, and was admitted to the Alabama Bar the same year.

She began working as a law clerk for the Circuit and District Court Judges of Colbert County in March of 2002.  Angela read a multitude of motions and researched the law to assist the judges in making their decisions.  While working as a law clerk, she benefited from observing Gary Alverson, who was District Attorney at the time.  Analyzing the methods and words he chose to prosecute cases, she filed those away in her mind for future use.

After her time as a law clerk, she began to actively seek employment as as an Assistant District Attorney.  She was hired by Bryce Graham in 2005 for that position in the Colbert County District Attorney’s Office.  Bryce was the newly elected District Attorney and he and Angela joined Chief Assistant District Attorney, Kyle Brown, in the office.  Each held strengths as lawyers that seemed to complement the other.

For many years, they worked as a team to prosecute numerous criminal offenses.  Then, in November 2018, Kyle Brown was elected as Circuit Judge. During his last year within the office, he and Angela prosecuted four capital murder cases together, which was likely unprecedented in the county. Upon his departure, Angela was appointed as the new Chief Assistant District Attorney.

The last few years have been difficult as the District Attorney’s Office has endured the Covid pandemic that has ravaged the county, as well as the criminal justice system.  Despite these difficulties,  Angela still holds the same passion in her heart for the job.  She has always loved Colbert County, from her days as a law clerk with an office in the courthouse basement, to her current second-floor office where she has spent numerous hours as the Assistant District Attorney.  As a daughter, wife, and mother of three children, Angela clearly understands how high the stakes are in preserving safety through law and order.

Being a prosecutor has been defined as “a lawyer with a higher moral calling.” That early calling is not new to Angela and it is why she is seeking the office of District Attorney. She has been guided by past and present county prosecutors and has successfully tried some of the most gruesome cases in Colbert County history.  She has walked with crime victims through some of their most agonizing times and shared the stress of awaiting a jury’s verdict with them.  She remains driven to exceed future demands of the law, just as she did when she was the first to successfully prosecute a case in Alabama involving chemical endangerment of an unborn child that resulted in death.

Lives are often drastically affected by judicial outcomes and crime victims deserve to be guided by someone with experience in navigating the criminal justice system.   Angela is the only candidate for this position who has experience in prosecuting felony offenses in front of a jury.  She is well equipped to continue making compelling arguments in front of juries on behalf of victims of crime and looks forward to doing so for many years to come.
