Mrs. Alverene Smallwood Owen, age 86, of Lacey’s Spring, died Tuesday, June 21, 2016, in Shepherd’s Cove Hospice.
Funeral service will be June 23, 2016, at 4 p.m. in Rescue United Methodist Church in Morgan City. The body will lie in state at the church from 2-4 p.m. on the day of service. Brother Jarod Andrews will officiate.
Burial will be in Rescue Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday, June 22, 2016, from 6-8 p.m. in Brindlee Mt. Chapel in Morgan City.
Mrs. Owen was born April 12, 1930, to Welmer and Leona Clark Smallwood. She taught school in the Morgan County School System, retiring after 31 years. She then started a second career with Wal-Mart, working there for 17 years. She graduated from Jacksonville State with a BS degree, a Master’s Degree and AA from Alabama A&M. She was a member of Alabama Teacher’s Association. Mrs. Owen was an active member of Rescue Methodist Church and especially loved working with the youth. She was married to Ray Owen.
Survivors are her husband of 57 1/2 years: Ray Owen; her son: W. Ray Owen; nieces, nephews, many friends, former students, and church family. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother: Henry Clifton (H.C.) Smallwood & sister: Olene Smallwood Blevins.
Pallbearers will be Stanley Black, Stuart Black, Michel Childers, James Dunn, Greg Parker.
