Almoth Horton Smith M.D., 85, passed away on December 19, 2022, at his home in Huntsville, Alabama. Horton was born on April 1, 1937 and was the only child of Al and Dorothy Smith. Horton is survived by his wife of 42 years, Brenda Staton Smith; his children, Laura Currie (Bob), Drew Smith (Kimberly), Scott Smith (Lady), Kristin Brown (Adam), Laura Leigh McManus (Wilson); and grandchildren, Caroline and Robert Currie, Andrew and Mary Morgan Smith, Duncan, Corinne and Gibson Smith, Allie and Anna Brown, and Clara, Wright and Molly McManus.

He was a graduate of Woodlawn High School, an Eagle Scout and attended Birmingham-Southern College where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Tulane University. Horton established his medical practice in Huntsville where he lived the remainder of his life except for his service as an enlisted member of the Army Medical Service at Fort Huachuca during Vietnam.

Horton’s passion for adventure continued into adulthood, and he was an accomplished photographer and pilot. He and his wife, Brenda, were avid birders and traveled to all seven continents in pursuit of sighting new species. Horton kept his binoculars, camera, and birding life list close just in case he spotted a new species to add to his list. Horton loved his time as a part of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church community and served on their mission trip medical team.

Horton lived a full life and was blessed by the gift of caring for women and delivering over 4000 babies during his career. His family would like to express gratitude to his patients, colleagues, and his caregivers from Hospice of North Alabama.

The memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Huntsville, Alabama, with visitation at 1:00 p.m. and the service at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church or Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuary.
