Alma Jean Cope Hardegree

A graveside service will be held at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Ashland, Alabama, Saturday August 5th at 10:00 AM CST officiated by grandsons-in-law, Reverend Michael Lusk and Reverend Logan Slaton.
Alma Jean Cope Hardegree, age 90, of Jasper, Georgia passed away peacefully July 29, 2023. She was born April 6, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of the late Douglas James Cope and Cora Adeline Barker Cope.
Alma met and married the love of her life, Barney Edwin Hardegree, in 1950 in Detroit, Michigan. They later relocated to his home state of Alabama and Alma remained a southern gal for the rest of her life.
In 1965, at the age of 32, she was diagnosed with bone cancer which led to the amputation of her right leg. She handled this misfortune with the strength and grace she was known for, even going on to deliver her fourth child in 1969.
The most important thing in her life was her family. She was widowed in 1983 and her family surrounded her with love and support for the remaining years of her life. Since 2012, she had resided with her son, Glen, who was a loving and very attentive caregiver.
She was extremely proud of her 14 grandchildren, and actively kept up with each of them and their many successes in life, as well as their children, her 22 great-grandchildren.
Alma was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and watched or attended every game she could. Her maltese, Lily, held a very special place in her heart and was by her side when she gained her wings as she slept.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Barney Edwin Hardegree as well as her son, John Edwin Hardegree.
Left behind to cherish her memory are three of her children, Charles Gregory Hardegree of Jasper, GA, Carol Jean Hardegree Wall (Dana) of Whitesburg, GA and her surprise blessing who would later become her closest friend and caregiver, Robert “Glen” Hardegree (Denise) of Jasper, GA, her grandchildren Shawn Hardegree (Alma) of Denver, CO, Kimberly Hardegree Turner (Skip) of Knoxville, TN, Elizabeth Hardegree Lusk (Michael) of Ball Ground, GA, Amanda Hardegree Stewart of Canton, GA, Adriana Vann of Sneads Ferry, NC, Kelli Wall Burns (Tyler) of Whitesburg, GA, Cade Wall (Raleigh) of Washington, DC, Karin Hardegree Ward (Brian) of Williamson, GA, Daniel Hardegree of Flowery Branch, GA, Jessie Hardegree Rinker (John) of Woodstock, GA and Jenny Hardegree Palmer (Zach) of Phoenix, AZ, Robert Hardegree (Heather) of Gainesville, GA, Katelyn Hardegree Sewell (Tristan) of Dahlonega, GA, Madalyn Hardegree Slaton (Logan) of Carnesville, GA.
