Alice J. Perkins of Leighton, AL answered God’s call to eternal rest at her home on Thursday, November 28, 2024.
Alice Perkins was born May 31, 1949, in Sheffield, AL to the late Al Abernathy, Jr. and the late Nazarene Madden Abernathy. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and united with the Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church, Leighton, AL. After uniting in marriage to her husband, Jim Henry (Woody) Perkins, June 5, 1973, she became a member of the Mt. New Home M.B. Church, Leighton, AL, where she was a faithfully member who served in the Matron’s Ministry, attended Sunday school, worship services, and other church activities. She was a long time member prior to the death of her husband and then united with the First M.B Church, Town Creek, AL, until God called her home.
Alice loved the Lord and contributed her blessings to the grace of God. She kept her faith and trusted God to overcome the many challenges encountered until she heard the Master say well done. She believed strongly in prayer; listen to her favorite Gospel music, and reading the Bible.
Alice is a 1968 graduate of Leighton Training School and was crowned Miss LTS 1965-1966. Upon graduating, Alice started her career in the sewing factor industry at the G C Lingerie Co. as a seamstress. Despite getting injured on the job and having to leave the sewing industry, her passion for fashion never ended. She used her talents to enhance her attire whether it was making her own pieces or adding elements that represented her own personality. She also made clothing for her family and friends.
Alice was a private person who enjoyed helping others without any recognition or expectation. She was a joyous person who loved to use her sense of humor to make others laugh, uplift their spirits, and gave words of encouragement. Two of her favorite saying were, “I’m just having fun” and “I need a little more Jesus”. Alice leaves to cherish her precious memory, two sons, Pastor Dr. Cedric (Angel) Perkins, Omaha, NE, Greg (Natasha) Perkins, Sr., Birmingham, AL; five sisters, Geraldine Thompson, Jamaica, NY, Georgia (Moses) Stanley Winder, GA, Lusterine Williams, Frisco, TX, Wanda (Ronnie) Houston, Pelham, AL, April Chandler, Muscle Shoals, AL; two brothers, Albert (Loretta) Abernathy, Jacksonville, FL, Ronnie (Patsy) Abernathy, Chicago, IL; one aunt, Mattie L Madden, Leighton, AL; fifteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
