MORGAN COUNTY – On Monday, Dec. 23, at approximately 12:50 p.m., Special Agents
with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI)
launched an investigation into an officer-involved shooting at the request of the Morgan County
Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred when officers with the Priceville Police Department
attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle that was reported stolen. The driver refused to
stop and a pursuit ensued where multiple agencies responded to assist, including deputies with
Morgan County Sheriff’s Office. Ultimately, the pursuit ended on Thompson Road at Byrd Road
in Morgan County. During the course of the incident, the suspect, identified as Drew Patterson
Banks, 41, of Decatur, exited the vehicle with what appeared to be a handgun. Upon further
investigation, it was determined that the firearm was a full-sized replica of a Sig Sauer 1911
semiautomatic handgun.

Banks was fatally wounded and pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured
during the course of the incident.

Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the findings will be
turned over to the Morgan County District Attorney’s Office.
