LIMESTONE COUNTY – According to Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell officers were called to a residence on Saturday were a caller from the residence reported a teen was threatening family members with knives. When police officers arrived they found a 15-year-old boy armed with knives, which he began throwing at police inside the home. The teenager then pointed a rifle at officers, Pressnell said, and one of them shot him.
The police chief said the shooting investigation has been turned over to Alabama’s State Bureau Of Investigations:
“On Saturday, June 15, at the request of the Athens Police Department, Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an investigation into an officer‐involved shooting
involving an officer with the Athens Police Department.
The incident occurred when an Athens Police Officer responded to a call for service on Elles Drive in Athens regarding a teenager threatening family members with a knife. Upon arrival, the officer made contact with a 15-year-old who brandished a firearm. The teen was injured by gunfire and transported to an area hospital for treatment where the teen was later pronounced deceased.
Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the findings will be turned over to the Limestone County District Attorney’s Office.” ~ Senior Trooper Brandon Bailey/Alabama Law Enforcement Agency
