ATHENS – The Athens-Limestone Community Association, in partnership with the City of Athens and Spirit Athens, will host the Second Annual Athens-Limestone Community Association Black History Celebration, Honoring the Past, Building for the Future. For the first time ever, this event will be Athens’ official Black History Month program.
“We are very proud to partner with Athens-Limestone Community Association and the
Spirit of Athens for the Second Annual ALCA Black History Celebration,” said Holly Hollman, City of Athens Communications Specialist. “When ALCA approached us and the Spirit of Athens to make this a joint event, we knew this was a perfect way to share the amazing story of African-Americans from Athens and Limestone County who made an impact on our community and celebrate those accomplishments during Black History Month,” Hollman added.
The program will be Friday, February 6, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church’s Beasley Center at 202 W. Bryan Street. There is no admission charge.
ALCA has a stellar roster of featured guests and speakers planned for the celebration.
Dr. Robert M. Mayberry, MS, MPH, Ph.D
Mayberry is a nationally noted scientist, scholar, and opinion leader in minority health. He is the Atlanta Clinical & Transitional Science Institute’s Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design Co-Director and Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Community Health and Preventative Medicine at the Morehouse College – School of Medicine in Atlanta. He attended the Trinity School. Mayberry will be the keynote speaker.
Rev. Louis Malone
Malone, a Trinity alumnus, is currently the pastor of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church of
Rockford, Ill. He was keynote speaker for the 2014 ALCA Black History Celebration.
Committed Acapella Chorus
Led by Bryant Malone of the Southside Church of Christ of Rogersville, Ala., the Committed Acapella Chorus will provide the entertainment.
ALCA will be selling their book by acclaimed author, Charlotte Fulton, Holding The Fort- The History of Trinity School, at the Black History Celebration. The book costs $40. The 2015 ALCA annual donation drive will begin at the Black History Celebration. All donations and the proceeds from the book sales will benefit the Trinity Community Center, which is scheduled to open in late spring 2015.
