Albert Leo Schrenk passed away on July 6, 2022, at Floyd E. ‘Tut’ Fann Nursing Home. His family was with him at the time. He was 92 years old.
Mr. Schrenk was born to William Aaron Schrenk and Ida Mary Kirn in Perryville, Missouri. The homestead farm was in Perry County and date back until 1836. He attended Rock Springs Elementary School where he had to walk several miles each way in rain or shine. He had to do chores before going to school. He told the family he never wanted to go back to that kind of work. At St Vincent’s High School, he learned how to play the trombone and later formed a swing era band with his brother, relatives and friends. This is how he met his beloved wife, Thelma Mae Yeager. They were married in 1950. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and spent boot camp in San Antonio, TX. Their first child, Albert Leo Jr, was born in London but passed away after 6 months. Fortunately, they had another son William Joseph in London. Albert and Thelma did get to tour Europe while they were there. At the end of his tour, they were sent to Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada. After his tour of duty he took advantage of the VA bill and enrolled in the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in Rolla, MO. He graduated from MSM Aug 1958 as a Mechanical Engineer. During their college years they had a daughter, Debra Ann. He worked for Boeing in Wichita, KS for two years on B-47s and B-52s. In 1960 he got the space bug and worked for Chrysler Corporation on boosters. After the space program phased was out, he worked in automotive electronics. In between he worked on C-5s in Marietta Ga. He retired in 1990.
Mr. Schrenk enjoyed helping his sons with the maintenance of their cars and helping them restore MOPARs. He also loved driving his 62 Valiant and 65 Chrysler which he showed at the 50th anniversary car shows of the Apollo Moon landing at the Space and Rocket Center. He also loved fishing whether it was local, in Canada, the Schrenk farm or deep-sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. He caught a record Blue Dolphin in Key Largo. Albert, Thelma and the family also spent vacation time in their condo in Cancun, Mexico. Albert even tried to snow ski with his grandchildren.
Mr. Schrenk was a long-time parishioner of the St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Parish since 1960.
Mr. Schrenk was preceded in deaths by his son, Albert Leo and his beloved wife Thelma. He is survived by his children: William Joseph Schrenk (Mary), Debra Ann Stramiello (Thomas) and Michael Alan Schrenk (Theresa). His grandchildren, Michelle Savoie, Aaron Schrenk, Stephanie Hagarty, Joseph Schrenk and Amanda Byers. His great grandchildren: Mary Katherine Savioie, Gabriella Savoie, Alexander Savoie, Olivia Savoie, Bode Schrenk, Austin Byers and Claire Byers.
Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. on 10 July 2022 at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Road NE, Huntsville, AL 35811, (256) 858-7611. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel officiated by Father Joy Nellissery. A burial service and reception will be afterward in the Valhalla reception room. Pallbearers: Joseph Schrenk, Shannon Hagarty, Will Byers, Thomas Stramiello, George Martin.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the St. Mary of the Visitation, 222 Jefferson St. N, Huntsville, AL 35801.
