Albert Craig Swain, 72, of Huntsville, passed away peacefully at home on September 18, 2023, after a lengthy illness. Born in Cookeville, Tennessee to Dr. Myrtle Thompson Swain and George Harry Swain, Albert was raised in Wilson, North Carolina where he attended Ralph L. Fike High School and played football during its two years as state champions, graduating in 1969.

In 1973, he received a BA in Economics from Columbia College of Columbia University in the City of New York where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity and lettered in football. In 1976, Albert then earned a Juris Doctor from Vanderbilt University School of Law. While at Vanderbilt, he was a cofounder of Student Legal Aid. In 1979, he graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law with a Master of Laws (in Taxation) in the inaugural class of its taxation degree. Albert practiced law in Alabama for over four decades. Al was a member of First United Methodist Church where he was honored to serve as Chairman of its Board of Trustees.

 

Albert was predeceased by his parents, and two brothers, George Harry Swain, Jr. and Kevin Thompson Swain. Survivors include his wife of forty-six years, Anne Thrasher Swain; daughter, Anna Catherine Swain (Robert Victor Goodin) of Durango, Colorado; son, Thomas Albert Swain (Joseph Martin Echols III) of Birmingham, Alabama; two granddaughters, Catherine and Elizabeth Goodin; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Albert’s family will remember him for his intellect, integrity, passion for learning, breadth of knowledge, quick wit, kind and gentle nature, storytelling, love of childhood friends, the natural world of the outdoors, and his dogs.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to The Dorothy Wright Thrasher and Tom Goodman Thrasher Presidential Scholarship Fund at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, 318 Shelbie King Hall, Huntsville, AL 35899, or a charity of your choice.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
