Alan Stone Underwood, born on October 22nd, 1961, in Colbert County, Alabama, peacefully passed away on Monday, December 11th, 2023, in the comfort of his home. Visitation will be Sunday, December 17, from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. A memorial service will immediately follow in the funeral home chapel with Chad Holder officiating.
A Deshler High School graduate of 1980, Alan left an indelible mark as an outstanding wrestler and formidable defensive lineman, earning two state heavyweight wrestling championships. His athletic prowess continued at the University of Alabama, contributing to the 1981 SEC Championship team. Returning to the Shoals, he played a pivotal role in the victories of the 1983 and 1985 North Alabama Gulf South Conference Championship teams, earning All GSC honors in both years. In 2008, Alan was rightfully inducted into the Colbert County Sports Hall of Fame.
Beyond sports, Alan embraced a love for the outdoors: camping, fishing, and finding solace on his forty acres. Cherishing family moments, he adored his dogs and granddaughter, Nola. Alan’s eclectic interests included aliens, Bigfoot documentaries, Coon Dog Cemetery visits, breakfast cooking, and the solace found in reading and music.
In 1985, Alan married his high school sweetheart, Susan, celebrating a remarkable 39-year union. Together, they navigated life’s joys and challenges, raising two beautiful daughters, Natalie and the late Brittany.
Preceded in death by his daughter, Brittany Underwood; brother, Andrew “Andy” Kee Underwood; mother, Patsy Hites; father, Bill Underwood; and stepfather, Harold Hites. Alan’s legacy endures through his devoted wife, Susan; daughter, Natalie Thompson (Jeff); granddaughter, Nola Thompson; and siblings, Dan Hites (Dru), David Hites (Penny), and Paige Redwine (Trent).
In honoring Alan, we celebrate not just the victories on the field but the enduring victories in the hearts he touched throughout his extraordinary journey. May he rest in peace.
