MONTGOMERY-On January 1, five Alabama state parks will host guided hikes in celebration of the annual First Day Hikes event. This nationwide event invites families to start the new year with an outdoor adventure. In 2016, Cheaha, DeSoto, Gulf, Monte Sano and Oak Mountain state parks will each host a guided hike.
“This event is a great way for people of all ages to get outside and see what our parks have to offer,” said Rob Grant, Assistant Director of Alabama State Parks. “From the easy trails at Gulf to the more moderate trails of DeSoto, hiking at an Alabama State Park is a deeply rewarding experience.”
The hikes range from an easy 1-mile trek to longer, more intense workouts, depending on the park and the terrain. Winter weather in Alabama can be dynamic. Hikers are reminded to check the weather forecast and plan accordingly. Dress in layers and bring plenty of water and snacks.
