Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange addresses Shoals Chamber of Commerce

FLORENCE – Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange visited the Shoals Chamber of Commerce this morning (Wednesday) to give his take on some of the legal issues affecting the State. The first-term politician from Birmingham gave a treatise on the issues facing his office.

He began the morning with this statement, “I have the best job in government today, because I get to go into the office every morning thinking about suing the Federal Government, which is unbelievably fun.”

Strange ran for Attorney General as an ultra-conservative, who was elected to office during the great Tea Party sweep of 2010.

The Affordable Care Act is centered in Strange’s sights. His office has joined into litigation with Catholic media-giant Eternal Word Television Network near Birmingham. His office is taking on the Obamacare requirement that the religious organization provide certain reproductive health coverages, such as birth control. He is also paying close attention to similar cases such as Chick Filet and Hobby Lobby.

Strange is knee-deep in the BP oil spill case. His office is taking aim at the oil-giant for lost tax revenue to the State. When he assumed office, Strange fired the law firm that the State of Alabama had previously hired to represent Alabama. The case was moved directly into the Attorney General’s Office. One of the biggest issues in the BP litigation he says is that the oil company is trying to modify the settlement that was previously agreed upon.

His office employs 85 lawyers in Montgomery.  In his first term, Strange has dealt with a number of controversial issues. Gun ownership and carry-rights is one of the big ones. But, probably the most well known issue with which his office has had to contend is the controversial Alabama immigration law. “Our job is to try and find solutions for people in Alabama who have to deal with these issues in the real world, while at the same time following the law,” Strange told the group. He added, “I’m hoping this next (Legislative) session will be a quiet, peaceful session.”
