Alabama A&M Dean’s Speaker Series – April 23, 2015

unnamedHUNTSVILLE-The Alabama A & M University Dean’s Speaker Series for April will be held on Thursday, April 23rd at 12:30 p.m. in the Arthur J. Bond Hall, room 233.  The keynote speaker will be Allan Von Chaney  his topic will be “A Life Full of Positive Adversity”.

Mount Olive in Mount Olive, NC. He helped lead the Trojans to a historic season with a record of 31-4 and an appearance to the NCAA Division II Elite 8. Allan is an inspiration to many and uses his personal experiences to help others, on and off the court. A Baltimore native, he graduated from New London High School in New London, CT, and was a highly rated basketball player around the country. Upon graduation, Allan committed to and played at the University of Florida for one season before deciding to transfer to Virginia Tech. He graduated from Virginia Tech with is undergraduate degree in Resource Management, but was not able to play basketball due to a heart condition.

Allan was diagnosed with viral myocarditis after passing out during an offseason workout in April 2010. As a result, he had to undergo heart surgery and have a defibrillator implanted. Given a second chance to live out his dreams, Allan was granted two years of the three years that he lost at Virginia Tech, and attended High Point University in High Point, NC. Allan’s first season at High Point University lead the program to its best season in school history and he was voted as National Comeback player of the year by CBSSports. Unfortunately, Allan’s second season with High Point University was cut short due to a life saving shock from his defibrillator during the 5th game of the season. Although things came to a screeching halt on the court, there was work that still needed to be done off the court and in the classroom. On May 3rd, Allan graduated with his Masters Degree in Non-Profit Management. His basketball career may be over, but Allan’s passion to motivate and positively change lives with his inspiring story is something he has great a passion for. Allan has plans on writing a book about his life in the coming years.
