Ms. Ailene Mitchell Smith, age 91, of Arab, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Marshall Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center on March 14, 2023. Ms. Smith was born on November 25, 1931, to Jessie Washington Mitchell and Lillie Mae Taylor Mitchell in Cullman County, Alabama. Ms. Smith was a high school graduate and earned an associates degree. She was married to Fred Smith who preceded her in death. She retired from Redstone Arsenal were she work for over 33 years as a secretary. Ailene was an Arab resident for over 64 years. She attended Arab First United Methodist Church and was a member of both the Mothers Club #2 and the Red Hat Society. Ailene was a big Alabama football fan. She was primary caretaker of both her parents and her husband prior to their deaths.
Ms. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Smith; parents, Jessie and Lillie Mitchell; and brother, Millard Mitchell.
She is survived by her son, James “Mitch” Smith (Brandy Atchley Smith); and step grandchildren, Clay Brown, Will Brown, Ella Brown, and Porter Granados.
A visitation for Ms. Smith will be held at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel Friday, March 17, 2023 between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 2:00 p.m. Brother Randy L. Blakely will be officiating. Interment will take place at Arab Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Keith Garrison, Blan Milner, Tommy Milner, Mike Smith, Toby Smith and Jim Snider. Honorary Pallbearer will be Brian Brown.
