Nécrologie de Agnes Marie HandleyAgnes Marie Hill Handley, 88, of Decatur, passed away at her home on August 23, 2023. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, and also on Thursday, August 31, 2023, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Roselawn Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at Roselawn Funeral Home with Mark Posey officiating. She will be laid to rest in Roselawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Handley was born December 2, 1934 in Decatur. She attended Somerville Road Elementary, David Hill Elementary (in Akron, OH), Decatur Jr. High, and Decatur High School, graduating as a member of the class of 1953. She also attended Anderson Business College in Decatur. She worked at the F.W. Woolworth store on Second Avenue and at Central Service Association in the utility billing department until around 1960.

Agnes married her beloved husband, James F. Handley, on April 19, 1958, and they were together for over 51 years until his passing in 2009. She was also preceded in death by her parents, William Pinkney Hill, Jr. and Clarice Edna Throneberry Hill, both of Decatur. She is survived by one son, James William “Jamie” Handley, also of Decatur.

Mrs. Handley’s parents and grandparents were founding members of the original Eastside Church of Christ in Decatur, which was eventually renamed to Beech Street Church of Christ. She was baptized into Christ in 1973 at Beech Street, and was also a member at Point Mallard Parkway, Austinville, and finally Decatur Church of Christ until the time of her death. She taught the Toddler’s class at Beech Street, Point Mallard Parkway, and Austinville for over 30 years, and was also a greeter at the Point Mallard and Austinville annual gospel singings for 24 years. She was also active in charity work, annually walking thru her Decatur neighborhood collecting contributions door to door for the March of Dimes, Arthritis Foundation, Heart Foundation, Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, and the American Lung Association.

The family would like to thank all the caregivers from Affinity Hospice for the kindness, care, and devotion they showed Mrs. Handley during the last few months of her life, and especially during the difficult last 2 to 3 weeks of her life.

The family would also like to thank the members of Decatur Church of Christ for their calls, cards, and visits throughout Mrs. Handley’s gradual decline since her stroke in October 2020. Friends from Decatur Church of Christ will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Free Clinic of Decatur-Morgan County.
