James Carl Hodges, Jr. passed peacefully at home with his family by his side on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Born in Dallas, Texas and raised in Irving, Texas, Jim was drafted into the United States Army on August 3, 1954 and sent to Ft Bliss, El Paso, Texas for Boot Training. After Boot Training, he was assigned to a training company at Ft. Eustis, Virginia where he received his Military Occupation Series training as an Aircraft Instrument and Electrical System Repairman. He was assigned to the U.S. Army Transportation Corps, 245th Army Aircraft Heavy Maintenance & Supply Company at Coleman Barracks, Mannheim, Germany from May 1955 to July 1956.

After his time in the Army, he attended Texas Tech University and graduated in August 1958 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. On the day of his graduation, he received a job offer from the Department of the Army at Redstone Arsenal. While a student at Texas Tech he met Sue Carnahan and they were married on December 27, 1958. They came straight to Huntsville since Jim was already working on the Arsenal where he was employed as an Aerospace Research Engineer in the Propulsion Directorate of the Research Laboratories, U.S. Army Missile Command. His primary work was in the development of Propellant Propulsion Systems. He retired in January 1995.

Jim was a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church since 1977 and served on several committees, including the Vision 2000 Building Committee for the South Campus as well as being an Adult Bible Study teacher and Deacon.

Preceded in death by his parents, James Carl Hodges and Blandina Hall Hodges, Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sue, daughters, Julie Peace (Ty), Janice Fain (John) and Jennifer Whitman (David), eight grandchildren: Emily Peace Macher (Thomas), Laura Peace Thompson (Logan), Nathan Peace, Taylor Plott, Bryan Plott (Morgan), Jessica Fain, Elizabeth Whitman and Jarrett Whitman, one great-granddaughter, Audra Thompson, and his sister-in-law, Angie Vail of Hillsboro, Texas.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Hospice of North Alabama and the Caregivers from Right at Home for the wonderful care they gave to Jim throughout the last several months.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Whitesburg Baptist Church Building Fund or Hospice of North Alabama.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023 at Whitesburg Baptist South Campus, with the funeral following at 2:00 p.m.
