Funeral service for Mrs. Vera Monks Stewart, age 97, of Fayetteville, TN, will be conducted Saturday, April 10, 2021 at 1 PM at Higgins Funeral Home with Rev. Darrel Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Saturday from 11 AM until time of service at Higgins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Vera was born on July 30, 1923 in Lincoln County to the late John William, Sr. and Vessie Jeffries Monks. Vera was raised in the Bellview community and attended Bellview school and graduated from Central High School. After graduation, she was employed by Union National Bank prior to her employment with the Fayetteville Electric System as a bookkeeper where one of her customers ended up being the love of her life, J.A. Stewart, Jr. He and Vera were married June of 1950. She and her husband were members of the Lincoln County Horseman’s Association. They owned harness racing horses and loved racing at the Lincoln County Fair and also in other states for several years. Vera loved her family and enjoyed shopping and collecting antiques and red birds. Mrs. Vera passed away Friday, April 2, 2021 surrounded by her loving family at Bailey Manor.

Survivors include her sister, Frances Gibson; brother, Maurice Monks; sister-in-law, Patsy Towry Monks; nieces, Cindy Langford, Myra Gale Monks, Jane Monks, Julia Faulkner, Jennifer Stafford, Lisa Gibson, Joan Berry, Vera Jill Conley, Janet Steelman; nephews, Terry Monks, Larry Monks and Chris Gibson; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, J. A. Stewart, Jr.; brothers, John William Monks, and L. Paul Monks sister, Mildred Holt; foster brother, Earl Gray; and nephew, Harrell Stephans.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Avalon Hospice, 305 South Jackson Street, Tullahoma, TN 37388 or Pleasant Grove Cemetery, care of Mr. Jack Towry, 65 West Point Drive, Fayetteville, TN 37334.
