FLORENCE-Florence Police Chief Ron Tyler has issued a written statement concerning the passing by the City Council ordinance concerning Short-Term rentals:
Message from Chief Ron Tyler regarding Short Term Rentals inside the city limits of Florence:
Many of you know last night, the City Council approved a resolution amending the city code to add regulations to Short-Term Rentals within the city limits. This was a very emotional topic that garnered much debate. People within our community have strong viewpoints on both sides of this issue.
Now that the matter has passed let me offer all the citizens of Florence some reassurance. Wherein these regulations now require all Short-Term Rental owners to obtain a city business license and STR permit, the police department can now identify and flag these properties within our CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) database as Short Term Rental locations.
After each month, I have instructed our IT staff to run a comprehensive report for all calls at these locations for our internal review. This report will tell our Command Staff the dates, times, numbers, and types of calls at each of these locations. We can closely monitor if any of these STR’s become a “hotspot” or problem location.
Rest assured, your concerns are our concerns. We will not knowingly permit any Short-Term Rental property owner to allow any residential property within the city limits of Florence to get away with violating city ordinances and state laws. Nor will we permit other disruptive behavior to occur within our neighborhoods without our prompt attention. With the passage of these regulations, we have these locations identified. We will monitor them to ensure areas remain safe and visitors enjoy our vibrant community.
Short-Term Rental properties do not have to be a zero-sum game where one side wins at the expense of the other. We will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure positive outcomes for everyone. We will adjust and hold people accountable when necessary.
As always, don’t hesitate to call us when necessary.
Kindest Regards,
Chief Ron Tyler
