THE SHOALS – Sunday, May 12, is Mother’s Day in America. Even though it is held on different days in other parts of the world, Mother’s Day in it aggregate is probably the most popular of all holidays. And why not?
Mother’s Day in America was first held in the early 20th Century. Anna Jarvis held a small memorial in Grafton, Virginia for her mother, who had passed away. She shortly thereafter began a national campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a national holiday. The American holiday began officially in 1914.
Did you know that Jarvis spent the rest of her life trying to have Mother’s Day withdrawn as a holiday? It is true. By about 1920, the holiday had become so commercialized that it turned her stomach.
That notwithstanding, for those of us who have our mothers still with us, and those of us who have said goodbye… Mother’s Day is a special Sunday.
Happy Mother’s Day!
