HUNTSVILLE-Last week, two popular north Alabama bands kicked off the Road to Roo competition at first and second place, out of over 900 musicians from across the country.
The Whiskey River Kings and The Valley Roots, who all hail from
across north Alabama, were accepted into the first round of voting for the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. Voting began online April 10 with The Whiskey River Kings taking the number one spot, and The Valley Roots taking number two.
“Both bands did an amazing job networking and promoting the competition several weeks in advance,” said label manager Daniel Horton.
Since voting started, The Whiskey River Kings have fallen to sixth place and The Valley Roots have fallen to 31.
Only two bands will be selected to play at the world renowned festival, and bands must be in the Top Ten before Wednesday April 24 to continue in the competition. Voting is online at http://bonnaroo.sonicbids.com/road-to-roo/, and voters have a chance to win two VIP passes to the festival.
The Valley Roots and The Whiskey River Kings are both signed to the independent Dirrty Apple Records of Harvest.
“We’re still doing great, but could use another push before April 24,” said Frankie Gardner, singer for the Whiskey River Kings.
Held on a farm in rural Tennessee since 2002, Bonnaroo is one of the largest festivals in the nation. The 2013 lineup includes Paul McCartney, Mumford and Sons, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, to name a few.
