Mavis Glay Savage Sutherland – Obituary

Mavis Glay Savage Sutherland , age 86, of Lawrenceburg, TN passed away Monday, March 18, 2013 at Friendship Manor Nursing Home in Pewee Valley, KY. She was a native of Walworth County, WI,  and worked at Madison College Hospital as a registered nurse.

Mavis was an avid church worker serving in various offices of the church. She served on several boards including the Highland Academy board for 16 years, and the Conference Committe for 7 years. She also served on the K-12 Board, Local School Board Chairman for 7 years, and the Harbert Hills Board from 1960 to the present. She was church clerk for at least 15 years, Pathfinder leader of nearly 20 years, and Sabbath School Superintendent for nearly 40 years. She was president of the Madison College Alumni for three years and served on the Layman Foundation Board for a number of years.

Mavis was a member of the Flower Lovers Circle Garden Club and a member of the Daughter’s of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, a Lady of the Grand Army of the Republic and associated organizations.

She was preceded in death by her parents Phillip Marion and Nona Ewers Savage, one son Corby Shaen Sutherland, one brother Roy Savage, and three sisters; Phyllis Harris, Wanda Talmage and Iris Keairnes.

She is survived by

Yolanda Elkins (Randy), Oakland, TN
Heather Butterfield (Leslie), Crestwood, KY

Two Sons –
Christopher E. Sutherland (Kendra), Smyrna, TN
Edward A. Sutherland (Carla), Lawrenceburg, TN

13 Grandchildren

A host of nieces and nephews also survive.

Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, March 22, 2013 at Neal Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at Neal Funeral Home at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 23, 2013, with Elder Lin Powell officiating. Interment will follow at Lawrence County Memorial Gardens in Lawrenceburg, TN.
