HIGHWAY 72A COLBERT COUNTY – The driver of a tractor-trailer is dead this morning after being hit by a Norfolk- Southern freight train. The accident happened at the railroad crossing on Golden Road about 10:30 AM, the driver of the truck was killed. His identity isn’t being released at the time of this writing.

According to police, the tractor-trailer driver was on the railroad tracks as the freight train was crossing the intersection. There was evidently no time for the train to stop. It is unclear at this time if the truck was moving, or was stalled on the tracks. The force of the impact shattered the truck’s cab and engine compartment, scattering engine parts and debris for over 100 feet from the impact. The force of the collision spun the truck around.

We will have more information when the Alabama Highway Patrol issues a statement.
