KTBTUSCUMBIA–Keep the Shoals Beautiful will be giving away Native Oakleaf Hydrangeas at 9am on March 14 at Spring Park in Tuscumbia. The hydrangeas are free of charge at while supplies last. The giveaway will take place at the new pavilion across from the train station. Members of the Shoals Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions and offer planting tips.

According to Dee Hubbert, chair of Keep the Shoals Beautiful, the giveaway ishydrangea-oak-leaf a continuation of Keep America Beautiful National Planting Day, an initiative across the nation to plant native plants. America is losing significant numbers of native plants and animals due in part to fragmented habitats and invasive species.

Native plants support local ecosystems, reduce water consumption, improve soil stability, and provide food and shelter for indigenous wildlife. The choice of giving away hydrangeas is ideal for the Shoals area as the Oakleaf hydrangea is the official Alabama state wildflower.

Keep the Shoals Beautiful is partnering with Shoals Chamber of Commerce, Tuscumbia Parks and Recreation Department, the Shoals Solid Waste Authority, and the City of Florence Recycling Center. You are invited to be a part of the first National Planting Day!
