Julia LaRen Johnson was born on September 30, 1966, in Huntsville, AL, and died on January 15, 2023, in Huntsville. She was preceded in death by her father, Doyle Johnson, and her infant sister, Lydia. She is survived by her mother, Betty Sanderson Johnson; brother, Jared Johnson and wife, Lynn; nephew, Sam Johnson; nieces, Olivia and Kendall Johnson; aunt, Susan Sanderson Brock and husband, Eric; uncle, Thomas Sanderson and wife, Susan; and five cousins. Julia loved and cherished all her family.

Julia was born with extreme hearing loss and legally blind. She was never able to drive, to enjoy music, or to relish the sounds of nature enjoyed by so many. But she accepted her lot in life without complaint. She did not gossip, slander, or judge. Despite her physical limitations, she succeeded at Huntsville High School. She was featured in the Huntsville Times as the first hearing impaired student to graduate with hearing students in traditional classrooms. She was featured again in the Huntsville Times when she learned to ride horses. She loved all the teachers who helped her along her way, and they loved her.

Julia was smart, quick, funny, and delightfully quirky. She hosted a Doctor Who party and found the Three Stooges and Groucho Marx hilarious. She loved pasta, cheesecake, Ferraro Rocher, Godiva, and a great steak. She thought Diet Coke was nectar and she treasured her Scooby Doo stuffed animal. Most of all, she loved her mother. Their bond was forged while spending every day of 56 years together. They were inseparable. They were a team.

Julia’s life was way too short. A mother should not survive her daughter. Her departure from us is indescribably painful, but we are assured that she can now clearly see and hear Heaven’s rejoicing at her arrival. Rest in peace, our darling girl. We will miss you forever and beseech God to help us survive your absence from us.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2023, at Maple Hill Cemetery.
