Juanita Howton Avery

Juanita Howton Avery, August 12, 1925 – December 26, 2022, was the third of seven children born to Sidney Greeley Howton and Annie Bell Barnett Howton in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. Juanita passed away peacefully at age 97 in Huntsville, Alabama. She was married 52 years to her love, Alvin Hubert Avery. They had three children and much effort and pride went into raising and supporting their family. Most of their family life was in Huntsville, Alabama where they attended Lakewood Baptist Church and enjoyed fun activities such as nearby camping and fishing, supporting their children’s various activities, and sports. Juanita was preceded in death by her husband Alvin Hubert Avery, her parents, Sidney Greeley Howton and Annie Bell Barnett Howton, and her siblings, Wynell Howton, Elouise Howton, Earline Wallace Hallman Horton, Greeley Burchell Howton, and James William Howton.

Juanita will be especially missed by her family. She is survived by her son Philip Hubert Avery (Melinda) and daughters Tracie Annette Smith (James) and Carol Yvonne Phillips (Dennis); five grandchildren, Jonathan Phillips, Jeffrey Smith (Emily), Matthew Avery (Jessica), Alison A. Lessard (Chris), and Rachel Smith Burge (Kevin); nine great-grandchildren, Anna Avery, Alex Avery, Connor Lessard, Avery Lessard, Madison Lessard, Lyla Lessard, Amber Burge, Evelyn Burge, and Ethan Smith; and brother Rauls E. Howton.

Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 at Spry Funeral Home in Huntsville, Alabama. There will be a graveside service at 11:30 at Maple Hill Cemetery officiated by Terrell Boyd. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to St. Jude’s Hospital.
