helen KellerSHEFFIELD – This month the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Resource Center celebrates the year anniversary of the official grand opening with the release of total number of patients helped through the Cancer Resource Center. In one year, more than 120 cancer patients have utilized the resources and information available at the Center, which is located at Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield.

Of the overall number, 69 patients received materials related to their specific cancer diagnosis and treatment, while 26 patients received information on local assistance and programs that aid in various ways, including nutrition and transportation. Wigs, hats, scarves, and other treatment related gift items are always available free of charge for those undergoing cancer treatments and facing partial or total loss of hair. More than 40 of these items were given to patients who visited the Cancer Resource Center.

The Cancer Resource Center assists with newly-diagnosed cancer patients and their families and caregivers, and the public with their questions and concerns about the disease. The center assisted 83 newly-diagnosed patients during its first year of operation.

“The presence of the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Resource Center at Helen Keller Hospital is a tremendous asset to our cancer patients as well as their families,” said Doug Arnold, Helen Keller Hospital CEO. “The Resource Center is truly an integral part of the North Alabama Cancer Institute, a multi-disciplinary cancer diagnosis and treatment program that develops and coordinates cancer services for patients. We are extremely grateful to the American Cancer Society for providing this invaluable resource for the Shoals area.”

Volunteers, recruited and trained by the American Cancer Society, staff the center. The Cancer Resource Center is a partnership between the American Cancer Society and Helen Keller Hospital.

“The information and resources provided to cancer patients and their families arms them with the tools needed to move forward through their cancer experience,” said Diane Peeples, American Cancer Society health initiatives representative. “We are fortunate to have a committed group of volunteers staffing the Cancer Resource Center who are always willing to meet the needs of the patients in or community.”

The American Cancer Society saves lives and creates more birthdays by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. For more information, call 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
