Robert Paul “Buddy” Smith

Robert Paul “Buddy” Smith of Athens, Alabama, passed away on Monday, September 19, 2022, at the age of 96 at home, surrounded by his family. Buddy was born in Athens on July 21, 1926, to Myrtle Croley Smith and Ruben Freeman Smith.
Buddy is survived by his wife, Ruby Smith; daughters, Regina Crawford (Ken) of Athens and Paula Demobreun (David) of Pensacola, FL; son, Kevin Smith (Angie) of Huntsville; granddaughters, Nichole Brooks (Clint), Shea Whitt (Ben), and Taylor Demobreun; grandsons, Edward Demobreun, Robert Smith, and Palmer Smith; gret-grandsons, Jacob Shackleford, Miles Whitt, and Crawford Whitt, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Buddy is preceded in death by his parents, Myrtle Croley Smith and Ruben Freeman Smith; his brothers, Bryan Smith, Harold H. Smith, Roy Marvin Smith, and James Croley Smith; his twin sister, Pauline Gossett; and his sister, Laverne Smith.
Buddy attended Athens High School, where he was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army in his senior year. He served in the Army during World War II from January of 1945 to November of 1946, and again from December of 1948 to August of 1952. Upon returning from service Buddy enrolled at the University of Alabama, where he graduated in 1957. After graduation he returned to Athens, where he married his childhood neighbor, lifelong sweetheart, and loving wife of 57 years, Ruby Smith.
Buddy has been a member of Northside Church of Christ for 57 years, where he served as a Deacon for several years. He was a true Christian example to all that knew him. Buddy worked as a Program Analyst at NASA for 40 years, retiring in 1994. While at NASA, he helped to launch countless NASA missions and was awarded the Silver Snoopy Award for his professionalism, dedication, and outstanding support that greatly enhanced flight safety and mission success during the Space Shuttle Space Transportation System Program.
Buddy loved to stay up to date on the latest health information, always sharing new tips and articles with his loved ones, and riding his exercise bike as long as he was able. He enjoyed every home cooked meal prepared with love by Ruby, and he always checked on the latest financial news and Alabama football games.
His kind and welcoming presence is already deeply missed by his family. may God rest his sweet soul.
Visitation will be at Spry Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be Thursday, September 22, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Spry Funeral Home, with Gary Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ken Crawford, Frank Gossett, Ben Whitt, Clint Brooks, Robert Smith, and Palmer Smith. Honorary pallbearers are David Demonbreun, Edward Demonbreun, Alan Thorton, and Jacob Shackleford.
