Richard Smith Art Auction to Benefit Art Association

SHEFFIELD-Art collectors will get the chance to bid on original watercolor artworks by the late Richard Smith at a benefit auction on Friday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m. The auction will take place at the Ritz Studio, which is next door to the Ritz Theatre in downtown Sheffield, AL. Courtesy of J.D. and Anna Smith, proceeds will benefit the Tennessee Valley Art Association, which runs the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art and The Ritz.

Smith was an artist of renown in the Shoals area as well as in his early career as a syndicated cartoonist. He lived much of his life in Iowa and moved to Alabama after retiring from dentistry. He was a signature member of the Watercolor Society of Indiana and long- time member of the Shoals Artist Guild. In his watercolor paintings, he loved to highlight clouds and was often known as the “cloud artist.

Richard’s wife Lorraine was also an artist and will have a few pieces up for bid as well. The auction will be facilitated by Dalton Appraisals and Auctions.
