Joseph Vernon Lay, Waynesboro, TN Joseph Vernon Lay of Waynesboro, TN was born March 14, 1934 in Waynesboro, TN, the son of the late John Hall and Juanita Farris Lay. He was united in marriage to the former Linda Brewer on November 5, 1960.

Mr. Lay was a farmer and had served as the Wayne County Property Assessor for sixteen years. He was a member of the Waynesboro Church of Christ in Waynesboro, Tennessee where he served as an Elder, was a member of the VFW and was a veteran of the United States Army.

Mr. Lay departed this life on Monday, August 15, 2022 at his home at the age of 88 years, 5 months and 1 day.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Brewer Lay of Waynesboro, TN; son, Victor Hall Lay, wife, Bethany of Spring Hill, TN; daughters, Scarlett Renee Bryant, husband, Terry and Verna Lynn Miller all of Waynesboro, TN; grandchildren, Clint Bryant, wife, Jessica, Cody Bryant, wife, Lilly, Lydia Lay, Lucas Lay, wife, Traci, Tori Lay and Sarah Lynn Miller; great-grandchildren, Colt, Braxton and Emma Bryant and Axle and Michelle Bryant; brothers, Billy Wade Lay, wife, Connie and Johnny Farris Lay, wife, Dianna all of Collinwood, TN and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Lay was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Lay Haddock.

Services will be held on Friday, August 19, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Waynesboro Church of Christ, Waynesboro, Tennessee, with Victor Lay and Terry Bryant officiating. Burial will follow in the Copeland, Cypert, Lay Cemetery, Waynesboro, Tennessee with Shackelford Funeral Directors, Wayne County assisting the family.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 18, 2022 from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Shackelford Funeral Directors, Waynesboro, TN. His body will be placed in the church one hour before the services on Friday, August 19, 2022.

Pallbearers will be Brent Lay, Bart Lay, James Haddock, Jonathan Lay, Tim Totsch and Kevin Scott with honorary pallbearers being Mike Gallian, Alan Bell, Terry Bryant, Charles Hunt and Carl Skelton.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be given to the Waynesboro Church of Christ benevolence fund or the Butterfly Foundation.
