TUSCUMBIA–Since 2013, visually or hearing impaired students from around Alabama have taken part in an exciting camp at Ivy Green, that allows them to experience the life of Helen Keller in an unforgettable way.

Camp Courage, A Helen Keller Experience is an intensive three-day camp for children based in Tuscumbia at Ivy Green, the home of Helen Keller.

Camp Courage: A Helen Keller Experience will take place April 7-9, 2022. Participants are 4th-6th graders that have hearing and/or visual impairments from across the southeast. Kickoff for the camp will be Thursday, April 7, 2022, at the Helen Keller Birthplace in Tuscumbia at 5:15 pm. At this time, campers will experience a reenactment of Annie Sullivan’s arrival by horse and buggy to Ivy Green and her first interaction with young Helen.

The amazing camp inspires children to celebrate their abilities and make a difference in the world, just as Helen Keller did. Helen Keller, who became blind and deaf as a child, overcame her disabilities to become an author, lecturer, activist for the disabled and inspiration to people around the world. She is known as America’s First Lady of Courage.

The Helen Keller Birthplace is located at 300 North Commons West, Tuscumbia, Alabama, 35674.
