Wendell Leon King, age 85, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.

Wendell was born in Section, Alabama to Marcus and Mary King, but spent most of his childhood in Dexter, New Mexico. He attended New Mexico State and graduated from Florence State (UNA) with a degree in Mathematics. He served a short stint in the Marines and then taught high school before starting his career as a computer programmer. He worked as a NASA support contractor at GE, CSC, and Boeing before retiring in 2000.

He was an avid basketball player, loved coaching basketball, and even played in the Senior Olympics. He was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, and the best Papa. He walked with God daily and instilled that faith within his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcus and Mary King, his brother, Edward, and his sister, Myra Lou Newling. Wendell is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eleanor King; four children, Tony King, Wendy Carriger (Brant), Claudia Styles (Bryan), and Mary Duncan (Marc); and eight grandchildren, Sydney Thornhill (Wes), Carson Styles, Catie Lee (Conrad), Presley Styles, Sabrina Duncan, Walker Styles, Colby Duncan and Carter Duncan. He was surrounded by family as he made the transition into God’s arms.

The family would like to thank Hospice and Huntsville Home Care for taking such good care of him.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, January 21 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home followed by a celebration of life service. Burial will be at Valhalla Cemetery immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Chapel Church, Huntsville Pregnancy Resource Center, or your local church.
