Well, dad wanted to write his own obituary but as you see that did not happen. After growing up in Gadsden, Alabama, graduating from Emma Sansom High School, he joins the United States Marines. During his military service dad traveled by ship through Japan. Dad was sick the whole ride. He was very proud of his military service, but his greatest joy was meeting his lifelong love, Venita. They became husband and wife on June 4, 1961. Sixty years later they were still going strong. He answered God’s call for the ministry. He had many reasons to say no, but many of us are so glad he said yes. The ministry journey began with Samford University and then to New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisiana. He pastored churches in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi while in school along with raising a daughter, Donla Sullivan (Scott) and a son, Jeff Gentry (Donna). He settled in Alabama with stops in Alexander City, Oxford, Valley, and Decatur. After “retiring” he went to Hawaii to preach on Kauai and Oahu. Not much “retiring” happened. We all have lifelong friends from our travels. He is survived by his wife, Venita Brown Gentry, afore mentioned children and grandchildren, Joshua, Bradley, Aaron, Rachel, Abbie, Emily, and Callie. Also, his pride was his 7 great grandchildren. He told them about Jesus’s love every chance he got. Sister, Kathie Zodhiates (Philip) and brother-in-law, Ron Stone (JoAnn). Our family wants to give a big thank you to Decatur Morgan Hospital, Decatur Rehab, and all of the doctors, nurses, and support staff. We will be praying for you all as you navigate this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Baptist Children’s Home or give to your Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 12 noon at Roselawn Cemetery.

Dad is Home!! This is a day to celebrate his life.
