James Earl Potter, 77, of Huntsville, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021, in Huntsville, Alabama. James was born in Texon, Texas, graduated from Andrews High School, Andrews, Texas, and received his U.S. Army draft notice in 1965, but enlisted so that he could get HAWK weapon system training. He retired after 20 years of honorable service as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 and as a Vietnam Era Veteran.

After his Army retirement, he received his Bachelor’s of Science from Athens State University, Athens, Alabama, and worked for Raytheon Company for 20 years as a Logistician. He loved Alabama football, hunting, bass fishing, making knives, restoring and finishing guns, spending time with his grandchildren, and telling stories about growing up in West Texas and about his Army career.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Short Potter; daughter, Amy Potter Hall (Michael); son, James Brian Potter (Chad); grandchildren, Ryan Hall and Alyson Hall; brother, Leslie Potter (Cherry); sister, Marian Rich; and many friends. James was preceded in death by his father, James Albert Potter, and his mother, Peggy Smith Potter.

Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. Friday, September 17th, followed by the service at 1 p.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Huntsville Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
