James O. Batte, Sr.

James O. Batte, Sr., 97, of Huntsville passed away Sunday. Born in Perry County, MS to O.J. and Annie Patterson Batte, James graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in Mathematics.

James served in the Army and was a WWII veteran. He was working at Kessler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS in 1955 when he was hired by the Army Ballistic Missile Program in Huntsville. In 1960, NASA was approved to take over all Army space-related activities and James transferred to Marshall Space Flight Center as soon as it opened. He retired as the Quality Assurance Chief after 34 years. James immediately began a 10-year career with Teledyne Brown Engineering.

James was a member of First Baptist Church and served on the “Baptist Builders” team. He also enjoyed gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Irma Breland, Ruth Harper, Evelyn Stringer and Lois Smith; and wives, Lamurl Hillman Batte and Flora O’Neal Batte. He is survived by sons, James O. Batte, Jr. (Sharon) and John R. Batte, Sr. (Carol); brother, Travis Batte (Carolyn); grandchildren, John R. Batte, Jr., Jennifer Batte, and Jacob Batte (Elizabeth); and great grandchild, Aerabella Batte.
