Elizabeth “Betty” Hunter Hoft passed away peacefully on August 26, 2021 at the age of ninety at the Huntsville Health and Rehabilitation LTC in Huntsville, Alabama.

Mrs. Hoft was born Elizabeth Lou Hunter in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Elizabeth and Myron Hunter on October 5, 1930. She grew up in Storm Lake, Iowa and attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids where she met her husband Willard L. Hoft. They were married on June 12, 1951 in Bedford, Iowa.

After marriage, Elizabeth and Willard travelled the country while Willard pursued his career in the aerospace industry before settling in Huntsville, Alabama with their two children in 1964. Elizabeth considered all the moving as a great adventure in seeing the country and took every opportunity to see the nation’s sights with her children. After raising her children, Elizabeth returned to school at the University of Alabama in Huntsville where she graduated with a BSN in Nursing in 1977. She served as the assistant director of nursing at Madison Manor Nursing Home before retiring.

Over the years, Elizabeth was an active member of her community. She was a member of the University Methodist Church and later the Grace Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for many years. She served as a Red Cross volunteer for school clinics and worked with Meals on Wheels as a volunteer. She was also involved in her children’s activities such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, PTA, and Band Parents.

Elizabeth was a devoted mother and grandmother who despite her early life challenges ensured that her children and grandchildren would never go without. She put a great value on their education both inside and outside of school. She always sought ways to connect with them and enrich their lives – supporting them in all their endeavors and never missing a single event while doing everything she could to bring her family joy. She was exceptionally caring and loyal and will be greatly missed.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughter Ann Bourgeois Lane (spouse Keith W. Lane) and her son, Willard Ben Hoft (spouse Marie G. Hoft) as well as grandchildren Elliot Bourgeois, Clair Bourgeois, Erica Player, Melissa Holland, and Amy Robertson, with 9 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her younger sister, Mary Hunter Youngblood.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband Willard L. Hoft, in 2015 and her sister, Martha Hunter Stiles in 2017.

Services will be held on September 20, 2021 at Hampton Cove Funeral Home, 6262 US-431, Owens Cross Rds, AL 35762. Visitation with family and friends will be at 1:00 PM and service at 2:00 PM.

The family would like to thank Huntsville Health and Rehabilitation LTC where she was happy and well cared for the last 2 years of her life and she passed away peacefully attended by Hospice Family Care.
