Let’s Go Eagles.

“August and decorated storefronts mean one thing, it’s time for one of our favorite Athens traditions, the Pep Rally on The Square,” Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks said.

Each year Athens High School kicks off football season by holding its pep rally on the Limestone County Courthouse steps as fans and students gather on Marion Street to cheer the Golden Eagles.

Cheerleaders and football players met with Marks on Monday, Aug. 16, when he signed a proclamation declaring Thursday, Aug. 19, as Rep the A Day in Athens. The proclamation is encouraging citizens, businesses and civic organizations to wear and display the school colors black and gold for the pep rally.

“One of many special things about Athens High School Football is the annual Pep Rally on The Square,” said Athens High Football Coach Cody Gross. “This tradition adds to our players’ overall football experience, and we appreciate the support of this great city.”

The proclamation states the Pep Rally on The Square showcases the city’s slogan of “Athens is Classic. Southern. Character.” by “brining players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members and fans together in our historic Downtown Athens to celebrate the school spirit of our Golden Eagles.”

The proclamation further states, “this camaraderie pays tribute to a long-held tradition and shows support for students, staff and our community.”

The pep rally will be Thursday at 3:15 p.m. on Marion Street. The street will be closed to traffic during the event.

Athens plays its opening game away on Aug. 20 against Fort Payne High School.
