Miss Linda Leigh Miller died at the Crossing at Clarity Hospice in Baton Rouge, LA on Monday, July 19, 2021. She was 61 and a retired coach and teacher for the Louisiana School for the Deaf. Linda was very competitive in triathlons and marathons before her health failed.

Linda was born to James H Miller and Gladys Ruth Luther Miller on Saturday, September 26, 1959 at the Tupelo Community Hospital in Tupelo, MS.

 

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 21, 2021 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of  Lee Memorial Funeral Home in Vernon, MS.  Visitation will be 12 noon until service time. Burial will follow in the Lee Memorial Park beside her paternal grandparents, James S. and Ruby Bradley Miller. Her brother, Bro. Rusty Miller, will officiate.

 

She was a member of the West Jackson Street Baptist Church where she made her profession of faith and was baptized in 1971. She later worshipped at St. Jude Catholic Church in Baton Rouge. Her faith journey reflects her family roots. She was a descendant of the Rev. Richard Denton, the founder of Presbyterianism in the USA, a descendant of the Rev. Adolph Nussman, the first Lutheran missionary pastor to the American colonies, the Rev. the Rev. Reuben Ellis, pioneer Methodist pastor in old Tishomingo County, and a host of Methodist and Baptist ministers.

 

She was educated in the Tupelo Public Schools and was a 1977 Graduate of Tupelo High School. She was active in Junior Civitans and Thespians. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi State University in 1981 and completed her Master of Science degree at Southern University in Baton Rouge. While at MSU she was on the Ladies Weightlifting Team and tutored for the Athletic Department. Coach Miller enjoyed all types of sports, especially softball and LSU Lady Tiger Basketball.

 

She is survived by:  four sisters: Ann Miller Bolton (David), of Baton Rouge; Allison Miller Bailey (Dewayne) of Tupelo; Lisa Rogers Hester (Delaine) of Nettleton, and Lea Rogers Winstead (Pat) of Eades, TN. Two brothers: Rusty Miller (Cathy) of Locke Station, MS and Brad Miller (Lawanda) of Tupelo. Cousins who were like sisters: Sharon (Mark) Harrison of Coxe’s Creek, KY, and Elizabeth (Matt) Gray of Tupelo.

Her paternal aunt Kathryn Miller Underwood of Coxe’s Creek, KY and step-mother Hilda Wade Miller of Tupelo.

Aunts:  Betty Wade Roberts and Jane Luther Russell (Ray), one uncle Charles (Diane) Wade.

Seven nieces and seven nephews; several great nieces and nephews, and a host of cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandparents: James S and Ruby Bradley Miller, Velna L and Lucille Bost Luther, and Raymond and Estelle Martin Wade.

 

Honorary Pallbearers will be: Andrew Miller, Austin Miller, Aaron Miller, Braden Miller, Joseph Hester, Jordan Hester, Noah Winstead, Greg Hillensbeck, Harley Ahsby, Chris Roberts, and Casey Roberts.

 

In lieu of flowers the family requests that in memory of Linda, and because she was a giving soul, choose a charity or cause to donate in her memory. Linda gave to many causes and charities that spoke to her giving spirit – this will honor her legacy of giving.
