SHEFFIELD – John Elkington has been coming to The Shoals for years. Not only because our home here is a beautiful place on the Tennessee River just a couple of hours away from his home near Memphis, but also for the fact that this is a great untapped location for world-class shopping, river sports, restaurants, housing and music. He is an advocate of the notion that a big-bang approach to development, rather than a piecemeal approach, is the way to go when developing a sustainable economic community. And Elkington should know, he’s developed many such planned-use communities and business districts in his career, including the world-famous Beale Street in Memphis.
Now, it’s our turn. So, why not kick things off with a bang…
The Quad Cities Daily was out at the site Monday to check it out and see the flurry of activity of construction equipment, power and water, fencing, concrete slabs going in. It was a veritable beehive of activity!
As far as the music goes, things are going to be different from the get-go. We spoke with Chris Ewing, who is developing The Slag venue and he told us that the first two concerts will be August 20 and 21.
August 20 features a Southern-Soul music band from Memphis, LUCERO… LUCERO WEBSITE .
On August 21, it’s DREW HOLCOMB & THE NEIGHBORS… Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors WEBSITE.
Check out these two bands’ websites. They’re great! And the music is completely different to what you might be used to hearing around here. It’s really going to be good. Here’s a link to their website. The Slag at Furnace Hill
