ATHENS-The Sister City Art Contest sponsored by Stonehaven and NE Scotland Twinning Group was held in Athens, Alabama to enable students to express their summer in Athens to the school children from Stonehaven, Scotland.
The artwork from Athens students will be displayed in downtown stores in Stonehaven, Scotland, and winners will receive prizes.
Local students ranging in ages from 3 to 16 created pieces that reflect their summer from enjoying ice cream in Athens to vacations to working in a dog kennel. Most recently, Stonehaven Waterfront Cafe displayed cards of encouragement sent by Mary Claire Besh with the Athens Mayor’s Youth Commission.

“What a unique opportunity for our local students to create and share their talents overseas,” Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks said.
In the upcoming school year, the Athens Mayor’s Youth Commission will host a similar art contest for Stonehaven students.
Athens, Ala., and the twinning group forged a Sister City agreement that kicked off in 2018 during the Athens Bicentennial Bash.
