LIMESTONE COUNTY-More than 20 Alabama towns will host walking tours on Saturday mornings in April as part of the Alabama Tourism Department April Walking Tours program. The free walking tours are scheduled at 10 a.m. and will be held on April 3, 10, 17 and 24. Tours were canceled last spring because of the virus pandemic.
The outdoor setting of the walking tours will allow the public to join in these events while following COVID-19 precautions, including social distancing, said Teresa Todd, Tourism President & CEO for Athens-Limestone County, AL.
There will be seven tours held each Saturday in Athens at 10am [the Donnell Home will not be open on April 3rd; all other tours will take place]
The Walks will also be held each Saturday in Mooresville, AL. at 10AM, you will gather outside at the Post Office on Lauderdale Street.
Todd mentioned Athens has a great history to share with the guest plus we have wonderful tour guides to tell our story and that makes for great attendance. Having a large attendance will ensure the State of Alabama Tourism will continue to support this educational initiative every year.
Knowledgeable guides will escort participants through historic neighborhoods and landmarks where they will share the record of the city of Athens including the past local businesses and families, architectural styles of the homes and other colorful moments in the community’s past life.
The seven Athens locations offered for tours this year are:
Historic Beaty District with tour guide Bill Ward
Historic Houston District with tour guide Will Weir
The Historic Downtown Square with tour guide William Pepper
Athens State University with tour guide Jamie Gilbert Mikell
Athens City Cemetery with tour guide Zack Magnusson
The Antebellum Donnell Home of Presbyterian Minister Robert Donnell with tour guide Alice Tiller & other members [Donnell Home tour not available on April 3rd]
Mooresville:
Historic Town of Mooresville with tour guides Shirley and Susan 
Reservations are not required and tours are held rain or shine. Participants are encouraged to wear a jacket/rain jacket or sweater and comfortable shoes for walking on a variety of surfaces. Tours may take a little over an hour to complete.
