ATHENS-As of 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 17 Weather information and other updates from the City of Athens:

Athens Weather Update

Please slow down and do not drive around sand trucks

Police Chief Floyd Johnson

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson asks that motorists do not drive around sand trucks when they are working in an area. Trucks with flashing lights will alert motorists when a sand truck is in operation. Johnson also asks that motorists slow down. Even if streets are clear of ice, utility crews and Public Works may have a lane blocked in order to work on a problem area.

“For their safety and your safety, let’s work together and use some caution,” Johnson said.

Utilities

As of 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17, there were 51 customers without power down from 6,000 on Monday. Scottsboro and Huntsville utility crews assisted Athens Utilities today as crews spent much of the afternoon replacing damaged poles.

Streets

Streets in Athens were clear as of Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Public Works did sand bridges and intersections that tend to ice over in case Athens gets more snow/ice during this current winter weather storm warning.

“I have staff on standby in case we get more precipitation that impacts the roads,” said Dolph Bradford with the Athens Street Department.

Central Church of Christ is open as a warming station and will be open tonight for anyone without power or who loses heat. Associate minister David Gallo said 10 people spent the night on Tuesday. The church has groceries to provide snacks and breakfast as well as cots to sleep. Limestone EMA and its volunteer resources donated supplies today as well.

“Thanks so much for the opportunity to serve this community,” Gallo said.
