ATHENS-As the weather remains severe with cold and icy streets the City of Athens has an update electrical outages and the condition of roadways in the city:
“Athens Weather Updates
Utilities
Two crews from Scottsboro Electric Power Board arrived in Athens Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 16) and are working with Athens Utilities on the pockets of larger outages and the isolated outages. As of 3:30 p.m., about 1,695 customers were without power. Residents should check their weatherhead to see if ice or limbs have damaged or pulled the weatherhead from their house. In those cases, homeowners will need to contact an electrician.
Warming Station
Central Church of Christ on U.S. 31 by the Athens High stadium is open as a warming station and will monitor the situation to determine how long it needs to stay open.
Sanitation
Sanitation will run as scheduled on Wednesday, Feb. 17, and sanitation crews will try to pick up both Tuesday and Wednesdays routes. Please have bins to the curb by 6 a.m.
Streets
Streets in the City of Athens are mainly clear although there are still slick spots and less traveled streets will have more slick areas. Please continue to use caution especially in elevated areas and on bridges. Also, continue to watch for fallen trees and limbs. City officials report seeing several trees on private property but near streets leaning from the weight of the ice.
City Offices
City offices will open on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 10 a.m.”
